Wayne Rooney’s father arrested over ‘football betting scam’

Wayne Rooney’s father was today arrested in an investigation into a betting scandal in Scottish football.
Wayne Snr, 48, was arrested at his home in the West Derby area of Liverpool. The Manchester United and England striker’s uncle Richie, 54, was also arrested as a total of nine men.
United star Rooney is currently in Montenengro with the England team preparing for Friday’s crucial Euro 2012 qualifier.
The two men were among nine who were detained by police in Merseyside and Glasgow.
One of them was Motherwell midfielder Steve Jennings as the investigation into match-fixing of the match between Motherwell and Hearts last year ramps up.
Scottish Football Association chief executive Stewart Regan confirmed that Jennings was arrested at his home by Merseyside Police on Thursday.
Regan says the development comes after ‘extensive enquiries’ into alleged betting irregularities in the Scottish Premier League match between Motherwell and Hearts on December 14 last year.
Regan said: ‘While the investigation involves several other individuals outwith Scotland, it is important to stress that the evidence gathered throughout this thorough period of investigation has involved only one Scottish match.
‘Motherwell FC are aware of the situation and will issue a response in due course. The Scottish FA will make no further comment at this stage.’
Jennings, who is still with Motherwell, has been centre of attention since bookies spotted suspicious betting patterns surrounding the match, which was shown on live TV.
In the match at Fir Park – which hosts Motherwell lost 2-1 – Jennings was shown a straight red card after complaining about his side failing to be awarded a penalty in the dying stages.
On the day of the match, someone in Liverpool opened an account with Blue Square to register two £100 bets on a Motherwell player being sent off.
The same individual attempted to make further big bets but was halted by the company’s online security filter.
Merseyside Police said: ‘Detectives have today executed warrants at 10 addresses across Merseyside and Glasgow and arrested nine men as part of an investigation into suspicious betting activity.
‘The arrests are the culmination of a joint operation with the Gambling Commission and the nine who have been arrested for conspiracy to defraud are being interviewed by detectives.
‘Those arrested are a 29-year-old from Bootle, a 48-year-old from West Derby, a 54-year-old from Norris Green, a 26-year-old from Croxteth, a 22-year-old from Kirkdale, a 31-year-old from Litherland, a 68-year-old from Fazakerley, a 36-year-old from Kirkby and a 26-year-old from Glasgow.
‘The investigation relates to a match between Motherwell and Hearts on December 14 2010.’
